MARKABLE Curly Coated Retrievers

History, Development and Character
There is strong historical evidence that the Curly was the first dog selectively bred to be used as a specialist Retriever in England. Since the late 18th Century, dogs comparable to the Curly in size and coat type, are evident in sporting prints, working as a team with humans to bring food to the table. Curlies were also used by the professional Gamekeepers to pick up game at the end of the days shoot, the Curlies determination and ability to find game were greatly admired traits.
The Curly was also used to warn off poachers illegally on the estate. This has developed a dog that is unlikely to bark unnecessarily at people that should be about; but who will announce strangers or sound the alarm if anything is unusual. The poachers also admired the Curlies temperament; finding them ideal for their requirements; a quiet working Retriever to assist in appropriating game from the estates.
Whether you are interested in a faithful and gentle pet, a working companion, or a conformation show dog; the Curly Coated Retriever is up to the challenge. The breed standard of the Curly demands characteristics of intelligence, steadiness and reliability; with a friendly, self-confident temperament in a dog that may seem aloof at first with strangers when compared to other retrieving breeds. With faithfulness, dedication and a discerning character the curly will wind his way into your heart and hearth. This will be intensified by your willingness to mould him by the environments you provide for him, both physically and mentally while he is growing-up.
