Markable Gillii 20 weeks
Markable Gillii known as Gillie is the son of Mallee and Saria from their second litter. One of 12 pups born on March 20th , 2012. One of Gillie's brothers Ochre has gone to Queensland and another Forest Rambler -Rambles is in Tasmania. Gillie is 6 months old and has gained 3 Best Baby of Breed awards. He was shown at the Royal Adelaide Show in Baby Puppy where he performed well and had a lovely day meeting lots of new people.
More importantly he has been training to be a Diabetic Alert Dog. For this he needs to let me know when my Blood Glucosellevel is at or just below 5.0 mmol/L. Gillie is showing great promise at this job. He has woken me numerous times allowing me to treat my low glucose level, preventing me from going lower overnight and therefore preventing a hypoglycaemic attack.
I have been conducting this training for another person and it is very exciting to see that Gillie can associate both the test sample BGL scent and can associate this with my own BGL levels and those of his intended owner Aaron. As a Behavioural Scientist I am very excited about this concept and I will be looking at gaining both State and Commonwealth assistance training accreditation so that I can help others who want to have a Diabetic Alert Dog.
Gillie went for a 2-week trial period in September to see if he will be suitable as an alert dog for this person. Sadly things didn't work out there with another another dog, as one was veryaggressive towards Gillie so he has come back home. I am continuing with his training and he will be placed as alert dog to Aaron in November. .
Gillie was Volhard temperment tested at 7 weeks and showed the strongest retrieving drive of all the pups. He also showed he is very ameanable to training and pragmatic when experiencing new things while out and about doing PAT training.. I hope he will also continue with his retrieving either competitively or for someone who likes rough shooting as he has shown great talent in this area too.
